Austria is home to over thirty officially classified grape varietals. Below are the most important ones, together with the percentage of total area under vines covered by them.
White Wine
Gruner Veltliner [36%]:
expressive fruit with often typical pepper and grapefruit note.
From fresh and lively to concentrated and monumental. A grape variety justly identified with Austrian wine culture.
Welschriesling [9%]:
delicate and fragrant with apple aromas, mostly slender with racy acidity.
Muller-Thurgau (Riesling x Sylvaner) [6.8%]:
discreet Muscat on the nose, with flowery fruit.
Riesling (Rheinriesling, Weiber Riesling) [3.4%]:
elegant, multi-layered on the nose, aromas of stone fruit, racy and delicate with classical structure.
Neuburger [2.6%]:
harmonious, discreet nut aromas, soft and full bodied.
Muskat-Ottonel [1%]:
marked Muscat aroma, slender and very characterisitc.

velvety and full bodied with delicate spice, characteristic cherry note and soft tannins.
fresh and with vibrant fruit, fine acidity.
Powerful and discreetly tannic, with tones of licquorice and dark berries.
fruity and mild, low acidity, low alcohol.
after the necessary maturation velvety and dry, full and pleasantly tannic.
light in colour, harmonious and velvety, often with smoky cherry character
cassis notes, tannic, often grassy on the nose when young, cedar and tobacco tones with maturation.
